What is Character?

Everybody has heir own unique set of qualities that defines them. But when we talk about Character education, or character building, what do we mean? And which qualities should we prioritize?

The development of a strong character should not be about creating a set of identical people all thinking and behaving in the same way. Rather, character building should enable individuals to become the best version of themselves, ready and able to contribute their unique abilities to the world.

Crux123 defines three core attributes that allow the best self to flourish: Courage, Kindness, and Humor.

1: Courage.

This is the courage to be yourself, to take risks, to act in a principled and ethical way, to make mistakes, to feel the fear but do it anyway. Courage is at the root of everything we do.

2: Kindness.

Without kindness, human societies could not have flourished. Kindness is cooperation, empathy, doing the right thing, empowerment. It is respect and care for others, but also self-respect and self-care. Kindness is not weakness - it takes huge strength.

3: Humor.

Retaining a sense of humor and a light heart build resilience and mental toughness. Good humor makes us more likeable and persuasive. Humor is the light that keeps us going through the dark times. You don’t need to be able to make people laugh, but being able to see the funny side is a vital attribute.
